"The greatest gift a couple can give their baby is a loving relationship."
—John and Julie Gottman

While starting a family can be one of the most joyful times of a couples’ relationship, it can also be one of the most stressful. A difficult period of adjustment is common. Counseling can lead to more productive communication and help stop negative dynamics from gaining a life of their own.

The arrival of a new baby generally leads to an increase of familial responsibilities in a context of sleep deprivation and scarce time for self-care or romantic connection. In the best of circumstances this environment can lead to a new level of irritability in the couple dynamic. And, when unspoken assumptions or disagreements about roles and responsibilities and/or parenting styles exist, conflict may be unavoidable.

Choosing to engage in couples’ counseling provides an opportunity to construct a solid foundation from which your family can thrive.

For some couples, the stress of parenting may uncover preexisting challenges in the relationship. In this case, the family’s adjustment may be the impetus to seek out guidance for healing past wounds and building a healthier future.
